Helping Children With Asthma
Children with asthma in reality have a far more positive outlook than people may think. Whilst there is no known immediate cure for the disease, provided the right amendments to the child's lifestyle are made and adhered to, there is every reason to believe that the condition will greatly improve as the child matures. A lot will depend on the exact nature of the asthma case, on the factors that trigger the asthma in the atmosphere, and on how the condition is medicated.
An early diagnosis of asthma greatly improves the ability of children to manage the condition and to keep it under control. Trials and experiments by scientists have clearly demonstrated that children who used an inhaler with corticosteroids within a year of suffering their first asthma attack were very much more capable of managing and keeping the condition under control than those who waited a few years before starting to manage the symptoms with medication in this way. Whilst the drugs used are not a cure in themselves, there appears to be a buildup effect from using them which reduces the inflammation of the lungs and airways. It is absolutely vital that children are monitored to ensure that they are carrying out the instructions of their doctor very precisely.
An accurate diagnosis of the condition is the initial key to treating asthma in children successfully, although this is rarely easy. Several different factors can trigger an attack, and there are more than one type of asthma. Some cases are caused by factors such as dust mites which are present in the modern home. It is thought that excessive exposure to dust mites is very likely to cause an infant to be more susceptible to being asthmatic as they grow and reach childhood. It is extremely important to keep a young baby's surroundings as free as possible from contaminants such as dust. It is quite possible that this action will avoid your child developing asthma and prevent the problems associates with it, although you will never know.
The environment of children with asthma is obviously very important. Being surrounded by and being constantly exposed to factors that are likely to trigger asthma is clearly the most damaging scenario. and is the worst thing that can happen. However ther will always be circumstances where it is simply not realistic to avoid the trigger factors completely. Being a parent in a location where you are aware that pollutants in the atmosphere are going to harm the health of your child is extraordinarily challenging. However, sometimes it is just not possible to avoid this situation. A classic example of this is when the parents need to be close to a polluted highway or very near to a city for work purposes.
There is a definite connection between obesity and asthma and a lot of children with asthma will also need to lose weight. Achieving a greater standard of fitness and reducing the weight of your child are extremely important objectives and, by helping you child to do this, you will be taking great steps forward in increasing the ability of your child to manage and control their health. However, it is important that stress is placed on a healthy, balanced diet and not eating junk food rather than attempting to lose weight by exercising excessively. Exercising too heavily is strongly linked to a deterioration of health in children with asthma.
Perhaps the most important step to take in helping children with asthma is to make them realise that over fifty percent of sufferers, after ten years of medication, cease to show any symptoms of the condition. The boost to their self-confidence will be highly beneficial and will help them set objectives to achieve. A positive mental attitude will greatly increase their abilty to tackle the disease and to deal with the problems that arise from it.
